Baltimore had its lowest homicide total in two decades last year, but data released this week show the city's homicide rate was No. 1 among the nation's largest cities in 2008.

Despite recording its lowest number of killings in 20 years in 2008 — 234, down from 282 in 2007 — there were 37 homicides per 100,000 city residents last year, ahead of Detroit at 34 per 100,000 and Washington, D.C., at about 31.
